What does Recommissioning of Water Systems mean?
As per the guidance issued by the Legionella Control Association (LCA) on 13th May, 2020, it is essential that when buildings reopen following the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, that water systems are not put straight back to use. Whether it buildings have been closed due to lockdown or for any other reason water systems should be recommissioned.
During any period of shutdown, if flushing cannot be carried out weekly, it is sensible to create a recommissioning plan for each water system. This allows for a safe start-up, and assurance to users that the water is safe and free of bacteria.
Recommissioning building water systems
If buildings are closed or unused for a period of time and water systems are simply used as normal it increases the risk of Legionella bacteria forming and a potential outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.
It is simple to set up a Recommissioning plan with a water hygiene specialist company such as Water Hygiene Consultants. We can provide a non obligation quote and have your water systems up and running quickly and efficiently.
Evaporative cooling systems
Evaporative cooling systems should already have robust start-up and shut-down procedures in place and the expectation is that these will be followed.
Hot and cold water systems
The minimum expectation for small, simple hot and cold water systems is flushing through with fresh mains water.
For large-scale buildings with storage tanks, showers, calorifiers and more complex pipework it is recommend you implement an extensive flushing followed by cleaning and disinfection. We can help you with this service.
Flushing
During flushing all valves should be operated in the fully open position so that any particulate matter can be flushed through.
Cleaning and disinfection
Where cleaning and disinfection is carried out, it is very important to monitor the decrease in disinfectant level over the course of the contact time.
Record keeping and validation testing
In all cases where water systems are being recommissioned it is advisable to have evidence show that the recommissioning process has been implemented and effective.
Water sampling for Legionella bacteria to BS7592 should be considered for recommissioning plans to validate the effectiveness of the process.
