Legionella Monitoring PPM Programmes

Are your water systems compliant? If you were to have laboratory samples taken today what would the results be? Make sure you have regular Legionella Risk Assessments arranged and if necessary Legionella Monitoring PPM Programs in place, which follow the Legionella Risk Assessment findings.

Are you responsible for a public water system?

If you are responsible for a water system it is recommended that you have a Legionella control monitoring and inspection programme in place.

Legionella Control

All businesses and organisations have a legal duty to ensure that the risk of Legionella proliferation and exposure is controlled.

In the event of an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, the authorities will require evidence of suitable Legionella Management and Legionella Control measures. Legionella control includes a current risk assessment which monitors records the water system’s current level of safety. Without this in place, organisations will be dealt with most severely by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Failure to meet with the required compliance.

The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems

A key component of ACoP L8 – The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems, is that after a Legionella Risk Assessment is completed a written monitoring plan to control the identified risks of Legionella is prepared.

A water monitoring plan will identify the chosen legionella control measures and how this will be implemented. Thewater monitoring plan will also evaluate how often the system should be monitored. A detailed record of the precautions and recommendations should be contained in a site logbook.

Your Health + Safety Obligations

ACoP L8 states that following a Legionella Risk Assessment you are required to prepare a written monitoring plan to control the identified risks of Legionella.

Water Hygiene Consultants Ltd provide a system log book which is used to store the records of legionella control monitoring tasks carried out, this includes;

  • Weekly flushing
  • Monthly temperature test results
  • Annual inspection of calorifiers
  • Annual water storage tank inspection
  • Quarterly descaling of shower heads and spray taps
  • 24 monthly Legionella Risk Assessment review
  • Temperatures and conditions will be compared with parameters detailed in ACOP L8
  • A water monitoring plan will be drawn up to identify the chosen control measure

A water monitoring plan should be closely adhered to and actions should be implemented, regularly managed and monitored.

Legionella Control Monitoring

If conditions are identified which could possibly lead to the growth of legionella bacteria, recommendations will be made to minimise the risk.
